Biography
of
Germain
Doucet, Sieur de La Verdure
By Carol J. Doucet
In order to know about Germain Doucet,
Sieur de La Verdure, I thought it was necessary to know also
about Acadia and its beginnings, what happened in Acadia before
his arrival, and the principal events that occurred during the
time that he spent in Acadia. Therefore, this work
includes a time line which has the most important events which
concern Acadia from the time of the first explorers until the
time of Doucet in Acadia.
I read more than three dozen books and innumerable articles on
web sites which had information about Germain and the years
during which he was in Acadia. It was also necessary to
find information about events that led to Razilly and the “300
men of the elite” going to retake Acadia from the English.
Material in English, seventeenth century French and modern
French were checked so as to present an accurate and
comprehensive biography.
Some of the topics covered were the beginnings of Acadia; peace
treaties; preparations to go retake possession of Acadia; the
Order of Malta; Germain—the man, father, soldier; and conflicts.
This book is available in English or in French. |

Germain Doucet, Sieur

l’Acadie; l’Ordre de Malte; Germain—l’homme, le père, le soldat;
Author
The author is a direct descendant of Germain Doucet, Sieur
de La Verdure, and of Michel Doucet (born 1722) who arrived in
Louisiana with his family in 1765.
He was raised in South Louisiana; French was his first language.
His preparation for thirty-four years of teaching French at the
high school level included a B. A. in Education with a major in
French, a Master’s Degree in French, and an Education Specialist
Degree. His Master’s thesis in 1970 was “The Acadian
French of Lafayette, Louisiana.”
In 1982, “La Charrue” (The Plow), a collection of his poems was
published.
During his military service, he was assigned to the United
States Military Liaison Mission (Potsdam, with headquarters in
Berlin) as French translator/interpreter. He is especially
proud of this fact because he was a Louisiana Cajun chosen for
that important work.
He has been a board member of Les Doucet du Monde since 1999. |
L’auteur
Masters degree en 1970 fut « The Acadian French of Lafayette,
