Background Information

Les Doucet du Monde is a non-profit family organization, established in Louisiana in 1997 as part of the Congres Mondial Acadien - Louisiane 1999 celebration of 300 years of French influence in Louisiana.

The founding meeting was held at the home of Richard Doucet of Church Point, Louisiana, who was elected President. Other officers elected included: Robert Doucet, Jennings, Louisiana, Vice President; Angelle Doucet, New Iberia, Louisiana, Secretary; and Camey Doucet, Lafayette, Louisiana, Treasurer. Elected to the Board of Directors were: Lillie Loftin, Lafayette; Myrtle Deranger, Opelousas; Bobbi Doucet, Church Point; and Willard Doucet, Jennings.

The family organization was incorporated under Louisiana law January 11, 1998.

The initial goal was to sponsor the First International Doucet Reunion, held on August 7th and 8th, 1999 at Opelousas, Louisiana. Family gathered from all over the United States, Canada and France. It is estimated that approximately 450 individuals attended this family reunion.

With the success of this first international family reunion, the desire grew to continue the family organization, gathering additional genealogical information, having future extended family activities and building a greater appreciation for those who have walked before us.

Election were held in November 1999 for officers and a Board of Directors who would serve from January 2000 through December 2001. Also, chapters were organized with one chapter for those members who roots go through Louisiana and the other chapter for those whose roots go straight to the Maritime provinces of Canada. The desire to create a third chapter for the French speaking members of Quebec and France never came about due to lack of members in those areas.

Dean Doucet of Apache Junction, Arizona, was elected President. Winston Boudeaux of Church Point, Louisiana, was elected Vice President, Susan Spencil of Lake Arthur, Louisiana, was elected Secretary, and Jacqueline Auclair of Saratoga, California, was elected Treasurer. Elected to the Board of Directors was: Richard Doucet of Church Point, Louisiana, Michele Doucette of Stephenville, Newfoundland, and Darlene Nielson of Delta, British Columbia.

Carol James Doucet of Lafayette, Louisiana, was elected President of the Cajun Chapter and Gaetan Doucet of Sudbury, Ontario, was elected as President of the Acadien Chapter.

As part of the election and creation of chapters, it was also approved to increase the number of members of the Board of Directors from four to six and include the chapter presidents as members of the Board.

Norman Doucette of Winchester, Massachusetts, was appointed to fill the vacancy on the Board. Samuel Doucet of Jennings, Louisiana, and James Gaboury of New Berlin, Wisconsin, were appointed to the newly created positions on the Board of Directors.

Winston Boudreaux and Susan Spencil resigned their positions, which remained unfilled for the duration of the term of office. Richard Doucet resigned from the Board of Directors and was replaced by Fred Union of Roseville, California.

It is recognized that various segments of the Doucet family have held family reunions, and that Doucet family members gathered as part of the first Congres Mondial Acadien in New Brunswick in 1994. The goal of Les Doucet du Monde is to continue and expand these family activities and to encourage greater participation in future activities.

The Second International Doucet Reunion will take place in 2004 in Nova Scotia. Although this will be the third worldwide gathering of the Acadian descendants, it will be only the second time for the Doucet family as a whole. This gathering will take one and all to the native land of early Acadie, from whence our ancestors came. We encourage all to plan now to attend and begin making the necessary arrangements to have another enjoyable gathering of Les Doucet du Monde.

Elections were held in November 2001 for the term of 2002 - 2003. Carol James Doucet of Lafayette, Louisiana, was elected President, with Darlene Nielson of Delta, British Columbia, being elected Vice President. Jacqueline Auclair was reelected Treasurer. The Secretary's position remained vacant.

Michele Doucette, Norman Doucette, Samuel Doucet, James Gaboury and Fred Union were re-elected to the Board of Directors. Dean Doucet was elected to the Board.

George Doucette of Nova Scotia was elected President of the Acadien Chapter. There wasn't a candidate for President of the Cajun Chapter. Becky Lavergne, of the chapter's board of directors, was appointed President of the chapter.

All individuals of Acadian and Cajun descent trace their roots back to the original Acadian settlers of 1632 to 1636. This hardy group of men and women were willing to brave a new world for themselves and their families. This knowledge elicits a deep sense of pride in those who know of their ancestry.

Becoming a member of Les Doucet du Monde is one way of establishing this deep-rooted familial connection with the descendants of Germain Doucet, Sieur de LaVerdure, the progenitor of nearly all of the Les Doucet du Monde family.

As the membership of Les Doucet du Monde declined, it was voted on by the Board to disband the organization as of December 31, 2015. The funds that were left were put toward keeping this web site operating for the purpose of research.
